Course Detail

An effective learning system is a key to my drumming lessons to help my students progress efficiently. This system is influenced by my learning experience in Berlin and ICMP London. All teaching materials are meticulously crafted and drawn from my original written handouts, exercises from music institutes and pages from famous drum education books. Course contents will be flexibly adapted to the student's age, experience and needs. The course is suitable for students of any level -- from beginner to advanced.

All Lessons will take place in a professional soundproof drum studio in Patchway Bristol.

The studio provides a nice and comfortable learning environment with the inclusion of a drum kit, percussion instruments and PA systems. To elevate students' learning experience, the studio will have a second drum kit in the near future.

Areas Covered

Readings

This is the most crucial part for students at the beginner and intermediate levels. Learning how to read music will allow students to understand the music pieces at a deeper level and, in turn, how to practice appropriately. Students can progress a lot both musically and technically when they have mastered their reading skills. And of course, I will be teaching these "boring" readings in an interesting way!

Teachniques

Techniques mainly include rudiments and independence. Rudiments are the combinations of different drum sticking which will help students to further develop their hand techniques. Independence is the coordination between four limbs which will affect your flexibility to access playing in different complexities. In addition, I will be covering some foot techniques as well.

Vocabularies

Most drum parts in contemporary music are constructed by grooves and fills. Like learning how to speak, we need to have enough vocabulary (Grooves & Fills) in our minds to know how to play. In the course, you will learn grooves and fills in different music notes, music styles and time signatures so that you can build up enough vocabulary base to like for your favourite songs!

Song Playalongs

Playing along with songs is always the most fun and exciting part of the lessons. It is also extremely important in drum education for students to apply their skills and knowledge in a music piece. All play-alongs are carefully selected to build up students' specific skills and stylistic awareness. These include popular songs from the 80s to the current eras, play-alongs from drum education books as well as exam pieces. Students can learn a lot from these songs while having fun!
